With 350 varieties of Omelettes, this is one eatery you must visit, if you haven’t already. It’s affordable and offers you food, which you will not get anywhere else.

I think I can’t ever write enough about Delhiites’ love for weird food. As long as the dish pleases the tastebuds, Delhiites are the happiest and the most loyal food lovers. How else one can explain the craze over Tandoori Momos or a Pizza Samosa, which you can find at Aman Namkeen Bhandar.

However, it’s not a new trend. Much before Chowmein Samosa or Pasta Sandwich came to the fore, Mr. Rahul Mehra was serving Monakos to Delhiites in the year 1989. From a small counter in Ashok Vihar, he grew bigger and moved to a humble dine-in eatery in Lawrence Road, called Rahul Eggs.

From boiled eggs and classic preparations, to something as bizarre as Afghani or Chinese Omelettes and Jalandhari’s, Mr. Mehra serves a mind-boggling 350 different varieties of egg preparations.

When I came to know about this place, I wasn’t sure how to feel – happy or confused. I did, however, feel very curious, to know how one can prepare 350 varieties of Omelettes.

Since, now-a-days, I am enjoying such eateries and unravelling the bizarre, I thought this would also make another interesting find. You might question the authenticity of food at such places, but at least they don’t offer you a done-to-death menu with no unique voice!

Once there, I was amazed by the enthusiasm with which the staff was able to sell the dishes. They can barely explain what ingredient goes into which omelette, but they can tell you how it would taste. Especially, Pradeep, a skinny little guy with an infectious smile. I feel, this place works largely because of his sheer enthusiasm for amazing customers with his suggestions. So naturally, within no time he had us sold too!

Going by his words, we ordered for:

  • Monako
  • Chicken Jalandhri
  • Chinese Korma Omelette
  • Special Garlic Bread

The names sounded confusing and believe me, even when the dishes arrived on our table, I was still as confused.

But, without thinking much, I dug in. And I liked what I ate. The flavour of egg stood out in each dish and I enjoyed the utter thrill of eating such unique mishmash.

Monako was nothing but Indian style French toast with boiled eggs, cheese, onion toppings along with sauces and chunky chat masala, served with green chutney. The soft egg toast, crunchy onion, chatpata masala, cheese and boiled egg gave different textures and flavours to the dish. It was simple, yet tasty and something that can be easily replicated at home.

Chicken Jalandhari is the best-selling dish. It comprises of bread, covered in chicken chunks that taste like chicken tikka, with a thick omelette as the final layer. Seasoned with fresh onions and coriander and topped with sauces like tomato ketchup and mayonnaise, one can really taste the masala of chicken tikka in the bread. This was spicy, juicy, sweet and crunchy at the same time. The deliciousness of two of my favourite ingredients: Chicken tikka and Omelette, shone through. This is the ultimate comfort food. When asked, why is it called Jalandhari, I was told, that the dish was conceptualised to celebrate bold Punjabi flavours. Mr. Rahul, along with his friend, had created this delicious mix of spicy eggs and chicken tikka and since his friend was from Jalandhar, he named the dish after him.

And then came Chinese Korma Omelette. I had found the name to be rather intriguing and felt curious about the final dish as well. It consisted of a fluffy fat omelette, with noodles and veggies in it. Covered in a blend of different sauces, it tasted quite unusual, in a good way. The eggs had been beaten to perfection for the fluffiness and the noodles added their own Indo-Chinese flavour. This is also available in Achari flavour, which I tried. It had actual chunks of Mango pickle and tasted a lot more like Achar and Egg Parantha.

The special garlic bread, an Indian style French toast, was made with Garlic Bread, covered with mayonnaise on top and spicy masala at the bottom. I enjoyed eating this one too. No wonder, it’s a favourite amongst kids.

From the old favourites, dishes that Mr. Rahul Mehra used to sell when he started his business, I liked a preparation that resembles a Birthday Cake. If you’re a new customer, they would introduce you to Rahul Eggs with this cake, made out of omelette and boiled eggs. What’s amusing is that they even play music, while you cut your cake.

I must say I was overwhelmed to see the conviction with which Mr Rahul implemented his ideas. We may or may not have a penchant for such ideas, but to his credit, he has a unique voice of his own, which is hard to ignore.

While I was eating, I saw that he safeguards the preparation fearlessly. Well, it’s anyway hard to guess what goes into the dish until you have a bite of it. However, that’s hardly a highlight of this place. I would visit this place only for the sheer joy of surprising myself, to feel the rush of eating unusual combination of flavours. Well actually, only to enjoy and not take food seriously, for once.
