La Bodega | Khan Market (Delhi)

Mexican ride in Delhi
Mexican ride in Delhi

My NOT so gratifying Mexican ride.

These days so many restaurants are sprouting up in Delhi that it’s hard to keep a track of them. Khan Market, Cyber hub, Hauz Khas Village, Mehar Chand and even our dear old Connaught place is now witnessing the opening of new eateries. However, for a gourmet, it’s heartening to choose from such varied range of cuisines, provided by these new buzzing places.

La bodega, is one such new kid on the block. Two months old now, it promises to give you a genuine taste of Mexican food. Mexican Food Culture, which is generally known to be rustic and easygoing, gets a Fine-Dine makeover here. Right from the food, décor, cutlery, music and the whole ambience, La bodega tries to create a Mexican vibe.

The restaurant is spread over two floors and is beautifully done up. After a brief tour of both the floors, we decided to sit on the second one, which is complimented with outside seating in the balcony as well. The lighting, furniture and music all seemed to gel together pretty well. So far, so good.

The staff was welcoming and attentive. However, the most unexciting time began after that when the menu was handed over to us. It got us really confused. Smriti Goyal (The Owner) came to our rescue. She was sweet enough to step in and suggest specials but it wasn’t much of help. Just like the menu her description was as Spanish. So we went ahead and ordered what we could understand.

The service was really quick and the food arrived in no time.

Tostada Bean Jalapeno was the dish of the day. The crunchy corn bread with beans and jalapeno tasted really good. It had great spices and a wonderful mix of ingredients to get you excited.

Chicken Dobladittas was the next dish to arrive on our table. Handmade tortillas stuffed with chicken in green mole sauce, sour cream, fresh cheese and black refried beans. This tasted good but nothing extraordinary. You can give it a miss.

Chicken Quesadillas, which we had ordered as a safe bet, turned out to be pretty disappointing. It was prepared the same way as Dobladittas minus the green mole sauce. But, quesadilla needs ‘quesa’ (cheese), which was hardly present. We took it up with the owner, who was sweet enough to get them made again.

More than the taste, it’s the portions of dishes, which is really incomprehensible. They are really small and do not justify the pricing. Either you burn a whole in your pocket or you go back home with an unfulfilled appetite. The bill came up to Rs 1421, inclusive of all taxes. Just with two starters and one main dish.

I was told that the Chef is Mexican and one can vouch for its authenticity, but I am not sure if Mexicans eat this little.

Overall, I felt the place looked nice, but the staff disappeared once the lady started attending us. The food was good but not stunning. And the pricing is immoderate. Since there are not many Mexican Restaurants in Delhi, I fail to understand why it was empty, on a Sunday night. They have a huge area in Khan Market, which is known for it’s great eateries. They have so many things going in their favour, that it’s disappointing to see a half-hearted attempt from the owners.

I don’t mind paying for one good hearty meal in a humble set up or any fine-dine restaurant, but this one seems to lack one major chord- the love for making people eat.
