For any ardent food lover, a new cuisine always brings a feeling of great excitement. Today I came back home happier, because I had finally warmed up to Sushi.

Japanese food for me had always been an enigma. Long ago, I had tried Sushi in Goa and although, I loved the punch of Wasabi, I never really become a fan. Hence, I could never place my feelings well enough, for Japanese food.

Nevertheless, I was pretty excited to visit Japanese Fuji Restaurant and couldn’t wait to give another shot to the food that had always confused me.

Located in the middle circle of Connaught Place, Japanese Fuji is one of its kinds. The ambience of the place is minimalistic yet authentic to its core. With Japanese music filling the air, minimalistic décor, typical cabin/floor seating and playful Japanese toys along with beautiful crockery, this place is as Japanese as it can be.

The staff was cordial, well groomed and each member of the team knew the menu very well. Amar, the service guy who looked after my table was extremely helpful to offer some suggestions. I ordered for:

  • Makimono sushi (Delhi Roll) (Rs 350)
  • Tori Teriyaki (Rs. 450)
  • Spicy Salmon Temaki (Rs. 350)
  • Tori Tempura (Rs 400)

I had a feeling that I might have got carried away with my order. As I sat down and made myself comfortable, traditional Japanese tea was served. I was mighty impressed with the way they kept refilling our teacups.

Before long, a beautiful looking Spicy Salmon Temaki arrived on our table. A popular dish in Japanese cuisine, Temaki is essentially a hand rolled sushi. The cone shaped Temaki has rice, specially prepared seaweed called nori, and fish or meat fillings. At Fuji, the roll was filled with rice, veggies and spicy salmon cubes. It was served along with Wasabi, Soy and Pickled ginger. After having a bite of this, I felt that I could not have asked for a better start.

Equally exciting and tasty was Makimono Sushi. A Japanese delicacy, it consists of cooked vinegared rice, raw seafood or a tropical fruit. Out here, it had chicken in the sushi (quite obviously – it’s Delhi!) and was served with Wasabi, Soy Sauce and Gari (Ginger). I felt joy with every bite, as my mouth filled up with a great medley of flavours.

Tori Tempura was made with boneless Chicken cubes dipped in light batter and deep-fried. Tempura is mostly made with cold water or sparkling water to get the outside crunchy texture. It was served with tempura sauce (a mix of sweet rice wine, soy sauce and a stock), grated radish and ginger. Served hot, the tempura sauce needs to be mixed with the grated radish and ginger, before dipping the tori tempura. With each bite this dish exudes flavours of salt, lemon, ginger and soy. I highly recommend this to all food lovers.

Tori Teriyaki was nothing but grilled chicken with teriyaki sauce. Teriyaki is a cooking technique wherein the chicken is grilled after being glazed with soy sauce, mirin (rice wine) and sugar. At Fuji, this was served with Mayonnaise and fresh salad. Though it tasted similar to Honey Chili Chicken, Tori Teriyaki was familiar, yet filling and yummy, nonetheless.

As I waded through the torrent of flavours, my confusion faded away and I fell in love with Japanese food. This however did take a toll on my stomach and senses, as by the end of it, I could barely talk. I just wanted to sip another cup of hot tea and dream about the food I’d just finished eating. But life is seldom so fair.

It was time to pay and go home to aloo gobhi.

The bill came up to Rs 1908, inclusive of all taxes.

The team behind Japanese Fuji (most of them are from Sakura, Metropolitan) has done a magnificent job at making a quality restaurant. Every aspect, be it presentation of food, ambience, service or value for money, this restaurant is a fine example of a heartfelt restaurant, in the very heart of the city.
