Double Date with Tibet Kitchen | Mcleodganj (India)

Tibet Kitchen

I have been to Mcleodganj 3-4 times but this was the first time I had the luck to get a table at Tibet Kitchen. The day before I was coming back to Delhi I went to the restaurant for dinner with my sister and few friends. It was around 8:45 PM, we were too excited to have Tibetan food. The only thing we didn’t know was by 9 PM they close their kitchen and most of their food gets over. They run so short on time that they almost become rude to their guests. We were shown the most inhospitable service by their staff. The Momos (and they have a good variety of them) were over and they weren’t ready to give any other recommendations.

We tried to keep our patience but soon we realised that it was better to walk out.

Next morning (the day I was returning back ) after some contemplation, I and my sister again visited the Tibetan Kitchen (I really wanted to visit the place as I was told great things about the food). Another hiccup was that it was raining heavily. My daring sister (who’s just started driving) decided to drive her Red Nano all the way to Mcleodganj from Dharamsala in the heavy rain. On the way I was silently hoping to get another waiter and not the rude one (my sister was still pissed with him and after so much of effort the last thing she wanted was to see him again). So this time we went there for lunch on a working day determined to fight our way through. Thankfully it wasn’t too crowded and we got our table with much ease. Yes! The plan worked out fine so far.

Without looking at the elaborate menu we ordered for the same dishes that we wanted to eat a night before. This time a nice guy from the staff looked after our table and not the rude one.

The order was:

  • Chicken steamed Momo
Chicken Steamed Momos
Chicken Steamed Momos
  • Chicken steamed with veggies in white gravy

  • Tingmo

  • Chicken Thenthuk

While we were sitting there I noticed that place is more embellished than other Tibetan Cafes in Mcleodganj. They have leather sofas, lamps, more number of covers and large number of staff. The café was decorated with Tibetan Flags and big posters carrying various excerpts from Buddhism. I noticed most people who visited this restaurant were Tibetans unlike other Tibetan cafes where the crowd is more multicultural. Earlier we were very skeptical before ordering because it seemed they were only interested in entertaining Tibetans or Foreigners. But as I mentioned earlier they had less footfall, so they had no choice but to entertain us.

After waiting for few minutes the food came on our table. And one bite of hot steaming Momo made us forget all the trouble we had to go through to eat here. The momos are unbelievably awesome. They were big in size and the Chicken filling was lavish. There is no other place that serves momos that are so delectable and so juicy. The chutney was equally wonderful.

The Steamed Chicken with vegetables in white gravy was served with Tibetan bread called Tingmo. The white gravy was subtle in flavor and the veggies were fresh and crunchy. It is highly recommended dish for people who are weight watchers.

Chicken Thenthuk was nice and extremely subtle in flavor. The Chicken in the Thenthuk was steamed. The flat square noodles were well cooked and the soup was good. But this dish was just about okay; I have had better Thenthuks at other places in Mcleodganj itself. Seasoning for the Thekthuk was perfect for me but for some people the dish could be bland.

Overall the food was good and just for the love of food I would like to visit this place again.

I only wish they improve on their people skills.

If you have patience then you must wait a while to eat the most authentic Tibetan food here, its worth the wait. Or else visit Gakyi, which is just few steps away on the same Jogiwara Road.

There was a sense of victory in me after I walked out of the restaurant. Me and my sister have so many moments together to cherish and this one just adds to the list.

My sister drove her Red Nano back to Dharamsala in the heavy rains, that I guess made this trip to Tibet Kitchen more memorable.
